Blockchain in Low Earth Orbit

John C. Vernaleo, Ph.D.

Cryptocurrency represents a novel attempt at reimagining currency in a digitally native and decentralized form. The fundamental data structure behind cryptocurrency is the blockchain, a database with relatively exotic characteristics. In the years since the original Bitcoin whitepaper, the use of blockchains has moved beyond the pure currency usage initially envisioned to a number of other areas. By transitioning all or part of the infrastructure behind these systems to LEO (either on ISS or low cost cubestats), we get to see the intersection of decentralization, currency, and an early stage technology with early expansion into space, all in a digitally native way. We will discuss the progress and implications of moving blockchains off-Earth as well as the progress made by Spacechain in launching a number of blockchain projects into LEO.
